The Goodrich Club, Inc. is a student living cooperative for Albion College students. Its central aim is to enhance its members’ education through social, physical, and intellectual participation in a cooperative housing experience.
Education through the Cooperative Living Experience
Members – i.e., undergraduate students – learn by managing the entire aspect of group residential living. This includes the obvious tasks of cooking, cleaning, and grocery shopping, but also maintenance, major repairs, budgeting, and financial management of the cooperative. Because the members manage the entire cooperative, members must address every need that arises, ranging from the prosaic spilled milk to the dramatic bathroom leak. While new members – undergraduate college students – may arrive with some experience in some of these areas, none has experienced all of them. The members learn by working their way through these experiences together.
The Goodrich Club is immersive. Members live together, share meals, share bathrooms, share responsibility for their surroundings. This shared experience is intense and teaches members to organize tasks and cooperate with each other. Members also learn to respect individual differences and capabilities, as each member brings unique skills and deficiencies to the task at hand. Goodrich Club members graduate with a set of interpersonal skills that are not taught in the classroom.
Membership
Membership in the Goodrich Club is open to any and all students of Albion College.
The Goodrich Club “constitution” and bylaws establish three classes of membership: Current, Honorary, and Alumni.
Current members of the Goodrich Club reside in the house. Because of its immersive, residential nature, the current members may not concurrently be a member of a Greek fraternity or sorority.
The Goodrich Club board of directors may grant honorary membership status to any individual who does not reside in the house but who supports its activities and who enhances the practical educational experience it provides.
Finally, the Goodrich Club recognizes alumni as members for the continuity and mentorship they provide.
